Hello, everyone! 👋 Today, let’s take a deeper dive into the world of life insurance, breaking it down into simple terms. We’ll unravel why Term Life Insurance is the better choice for many individuals compared to Universal Life Insurance and Whole Life Insurance.
Before we dive in, ensure you follow me on Facebook and YouTube for more educational content on investing and personal finance. Make sure you read to the end for bonus tips and don’t forget to like the video below and subscribe to my channel.
Let’s dive into the step-by-step educational guide! 🚀💰
Life insurance serves a simple but crucial purpose — it’s there to replace the income for our loved ones when we’re no longer around. To keep things clear, the purpose of life insurance is simply for income replacement so that your family and loved ones will not be burdened by the financial vacuum of your absence.
If anyone depends on your income, you NEED life insurance. However, it’s important to get the right type. I strongly recommend opting for a TERM life insurance policy. Let’s explore why?
The reason I’m explaining the purpose of life insurance to you is so that it’s not misused. When the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable. I have come across individuals that use life insurance as an investment vehicle – this is unwise – infact it’s stupid.
When an insurance product is combined with an investment product, the financial result is unusually sub-optimal and pitiful.
🚫 Life insurance is NOT intended for funding children’s education, borrowing, leverage, or savings and investments—it’s not an investment vehicle. It’s akin to someone suggesting they can turn their car into a bedroom. While you can technically sleep in your car, its primary design is not for that purpose. Some may choose to do so, but both you and I know it wouldn’t provide the most comfortable sleeping experience.
Again, when the purpose of a thing is not known and understod, abuse and misuse is inevitable. Life insurance is not a magical fund for education, loans, or investments. Its primary job is income replacement for your dependants (family and loved ones) when you are no longer here.
Now that we have this out of the way, let’s explore the different types of life insurance! 🚀💰
In the grand scheme of things, Term Life Insurance stands out for several reasons, making it a practical and cost-effective choice:
1. Cost-Friendly: Term Life Insurance keeps your finances in check with lower premiums. The money saved can be directed towards other crucial areas like investments, emergencies, or paying off debts. Ready to invest or need guidance paying off debt? ► Book a personalized coaching session here
2. Flexibility: Life is unpredictable, and your coverage should adapt. Term Life offers flexibility, allowing you to adjust your plan as your needs evolve over time.
3. Investment Freedom: Instead of being tied to a specific investment within a Universal or Whole Life policy, Term Life provides the freedom to choose where to invest your money, potentially leading to greater returns.
4. Tailored Coverage: It’s akin to picking the right tool for the job. Term Life Insurance is often chosen for specific life stages and major financial responsibilities, providing targeted coverage when needed the most.
5. Budget Control: Lower premiums mean you’re in control of your budget. This financial breathing room allows you to actively manage your investments and gradually build wealth over time.Want to learn more about budgeting? ► Click here
6. Change-Friendly: Life goals change, and Term Life Insurance acknowledges that. As your financial situation improves or dependents become less reliant on your income, you can reassess and possibly reduce coverage.
Term life stands out as the budget-friendly, reliable option, while whole and universal life bring unnecessary complexities and costs. Stick to the basics, keep it simple, and let your money work for you efficiently.
Remember, life insurance isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme. It’s your safety net for loved ones. Keep it straightforward, and you’ll find peace of mind without breaking the bank.

Do you want to:
Next up, whole life insurance. This type of insurance offers lifelong coverage and includes a cash value component that grows over time. While the idea of having coverage for your entire life may be comforting, whole life insurance comes at a higher cost compared to term insurance.
The premiums for whole life insurance are substantially higher because they fund both the death benefit and the cash value account. This can limit your ability to invest in other opportunities that might provide better returns.
The drawbacks of whole life insurance,is that though it offers lifelong protection, it comes at a steep price. Premiums can soar to $600-$800 per month, and the cash value it claims to build is compromised by inflation.
The rate of return on these policies is disappointing, sometimes as low as 1% or 2%, even before considering inflation. This makes it less effective as a savings tool.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Provides lifetime coverage | Hefty premiums of $600 to $800 per month |
| Cash value component for savings | Complex and may not keep up with changing financial needs |
| Guarantees a death benefit | Overcomplicated with unnecessary savings options |

Do you want to:
There are primarily 2 types of life insurance:
Term life is the budget-friendly option, providing straightforward coverage for a specific period, typically 10–30 years. If you pass away during this time, your loved ones receive a payout.
Think of Term Life Insurance as renting protection for a specific period—10, 20, or 30 years. The key advantage? Affordability! It usually ranges from $13 to $50 a month, ensuring that your beneficiaries receive the death benefit if anything happens during this time.
Note: These figures can vary based on factors such as age, health, and coverage amount.
One of the primary advantages of term insurance is its affordability. Since you’re paying for pure life coverage without the added complexities of cash value accumulation, the premiums are generally lower. This makes term insurance an excellent choice for those who want maximum coverage at a budget-friendly price.
Consider term life insurance as the reliable family guard dog. It’s simple, affordable, and lasts for a set time. If tragedy strikes within that period, your loved ones receive a straightforward payout—no frills, no complications.
Plus, it won’t burn a hole in your pocket like the fancier and complicated permanent life insurance – universal and whole life insurance policies.🤯
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Most affordable premiums (less than $50 per month) | No cash value unless death occurs within the term |
| Simple and straightforward | No investment options, purely protection-based |
| Provides coverage for specific durations | No savings component |
The cons of term life insurance are technically not disadvantages because there are better alternative vehicles to achieve the same purpose. For example:
If you are in Canada, you can invest directly in the TFSA, RRSP, and non-registered investment accounts, and your money will grow much better than if it were put into a permanent life insurance policy, as we will discuss below.
If you reside in the US, you can invest in Roth IRAs, 401k, traditional IRA, and 401k vehicles. Your cash will grow better and faster in these vehicles.
Now, let’s talk about universal life insurance. Universal Life Insurance, a combination of insurance protection and investment, may sound enticing, but the reality is less appealing. Despite being indexed to the S&P 500, the high premiums, often around $300-$450 per month, coupled with additional fees for managing the investment component, make it a less attractive option. Returns are significantly lower due to management fees, making it often not worth the investment.
Unlike term insurance, universal life insurance combines a death benefit with a savings or investment component. While this may sound appealing, it often comes with higher premiums and fees.
The cash value portion is subject to market fluctuations, which can be risky. The flexibility of universal life insurance can be a double-edged sword. While it allows you to adjust your coverage and premiums, it also requires careful management of the investment component. If the market doesn’t perform well, it can impact your policy negatively.
Universal life insurance sounds like a win-win, but is it? It claims to grow your money while protecting your family. Picture it like walking a financial tightrope, attempting to balance insurance and investment. It involves monthly payments, extra fees —it’s like walking on a wobbly board. Will it stay firm, or will market ups and downs make it shaky?
Universal life insurance comes in three flavors: Indexed, Guaranteed, and Variable. Each has its quirks, but the common thread is high fees. Indexed plays the stock market, Guaranteed sticks to fixed rates, and Variable lets you play investment guru.
However, my recommendation? Keep life insurance and investments separate for a smoother financial journey.
| Types of Universal Life Insurance | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Indexed | Links to market performance | Lower returns due to insurance company fees |
| Guaranteed | Premiums stay the same | Builds minimal cash value |
| Variable | Allows investment | High fees and risks involved |
Regarding the absence of a savings component, you can simply open a high-yield savings account and save your money there. It will perform much better than in an insurance vehicle. If you’re in Canada, you can open a high-yield savings account with Wealthsimple and earn over 4% on your deposits. Plus, you’ll get $25 when you fund a Wealthsimple account.
In the grand scheme of things, Term Life Insurance stands out for several reasons, making it a practical and cost-effective choice:
