First, ensure that the Ledger device is still properly wrapped in a transparent plastic wrap and the seal is still intact and unopened. Next, unwrap the Ledger box to confirm the contents of the box. It should contain these items:
As explained in the “What To Do Before Buying Bitcoin” crypto for beginners course, you should never buy your Ledger device on any third-party website such as Amazon, eBay, Costco, BestBuy, Wal-Mart or a friend. Always buy your crypto hardware wallet(s) directly from the manufacturer to ensure the authenticity of your Ledger Nano X. To access the correct and official website for Ledger, click here.
Next, stay alone and find a quiet and safe place with internet connectivity to get started with the Ledger set up.
a. First, download the Ledger Live app onto your computer.
b. Once the Ledger Live app is installed, open the app and click “Get Started”
c. Next, select the device you want to set up: Ledger Nano X
d. Since this is the first time you’re setting up your Ledger device, click “Setup A New Nano X”
e. Next it walks your through some basic educational contents in five slides

1/5: Access Your Crypto: Your crypto assets are stored on the blockchain. You need a private key to access and manage them. Click “Continue”
2/5: Own Your Private Key: Your private key is stored within your Nano. You must be the only one to own it to be in control of your money. Click “Continue”
3/5: Stay Offline: Your Nano works as a “cold storage” wallet. This means that it never exposes your private key online, even when using the app. Click “Continue”
4/5: Validate Transactions: Ledger Live allows you to buy, sell, manage, exchange and earn crypto while remaining protected. You will validate every crypto transaction with your Nano. Click “Continue”
5/5: Let’s Set Up Your Nano!: We start by setting up your Nano security. Click on “Let’s do this!”

f. Turn on your Ledger Nano X by connecting it to your computer using the USB cable
g. Follow the on-screen navigation instructions to interact with your Ledger device
h. Select “Set Up As A New Device”. To validate the selection, press both left and right buttons at the same time.
i. Next, follow the instructions on your Ledger device screen to set up your PIN Code
On Ledger Live, Click “Next Step”
a. Your PIN Code is the first layer of security. It physically secures access to your private key and your Nano.
b. Your PIN Code must be 4 to 8 digits long. I usually recommend 8 digits.
c. On Ledger Live App, select “I understand that I must choose my PIN Code myself and keep it private”
d. Select Set Up PIN Code
e. To Choose Your PIN Code: press the left or right button to change the digits on your Ledger Nano X
f. Once you get to your desired digit, validate the entry by pressing the left and right buttons at the same time.
g. Next the cursor on the Ledger device moves to the next tab.
h. Again, press the left or right button to change the digit and authenticate accordingly once you get to your desired number.
i. Next, repeat the steps until you’ve chosen your desired PIN code.
j. Confirm the PIN Code again by entering the PIN code on the Ledger device

✍️ I recommend you write out the PIN code first in your paper notebook before entering it on your Ledger device to minimize errors.
✅ Always choose your PIN yourself
❌ Three wrong PIN Code entries in a row will reset the device
❌ Never use a PIN like 1111, 5555, 0000, 12345
❌ Never share your PIN with anyone. Not even with Ledger
❌ Never store your PIN on your computer or laptop or phone or any device connected to the internet

Next, your Ledger Nano X should now read “Write Down Your Recovery Phrase
This is the most important part of the set up. One of the primary reasons for owning a cold wallet like Ledger Nano X is to store your keys offline and out of reach of hackers and malwares.
It’s important to NEVER store your PIN Code or recovery phrase on password manager on your phone, laptop, tablet, computer or any device connected to the internet. Don’t use apps or screenshots, photos or videos to store your recovery phrase.
It totally defeats the purpose of owning a cold storage wallet. Don’t make yourself vulnerable to hacks, thefts, and malicious attacks by storing your recovery phrase online. You can lose all your crypto investments.
Next,
a. There are 3 recovery sheets/cards in your Ledger Nano X box.
b. Now go ahead and use one of the recovery sheets to write out your 24 word recovery phrase. Ensure you write it out in order. Don’t mix up the numbers and phrases. Meaning write phrase #1 on #1 and phrase #2 on #2 and so on.
c. On your Ledger Nano X, scroll right to get started to read the disclaimers and on-screen instructions
d. Remember to press both the left and right buttons to start writing out each phrase on the card.

🔢 Write each word in order
✅ Spell each word correctly

e. Once you’ve written down the final word, scroll back through your words for check the accuracy of the spelling and word order.
f. Next, scroll right until your Ledger device reads “Confirm Your Recovery Phrase”
g. Next, press both the left and right buttons at the same time
h. You then need to verify each word in order by matching the number and phrase from #1 through #24. Refer to your recovery sheet.
i. Starting with word #1, use the buttons to scroll until the correct word is displayed
j. Once the correct word and # is displayed, press both buttons at the same time to confirm
k. Repeat the step until the 24th word is confirmed
l. When you confirm the last word, you’ll see “Your recovery phrase is set”
m. Scroll right to follow the on-screen instructions.
n. Next, you’ll see “Processing” on the device
o. Then “Your device is ready”
Press both buttons to access the dashboard
Go to dashboard is displayed
Next , scroll right: “Install app” is displayed
Go back to the Ledger Live App on your laptop / computer and click through the recovery phrase steps by pressing “Get Started”, “Continue”, “OK, I’m done”

Your crypto is always stored on the blockchain. Your hardware wallet only holds your private keys, which gives you access to your crypto.

Anyone who knows your recovery phrase can steal your crypto assets. If you lose it, you must quickly transfer your crypto to a secure place.

✅ Still Offline
❌ Briefly connected to the internet
Your private key always remains offline in your hardware wallet. Even when connected to your Nano, the Ledger app cannot access your private key. You must physically authorize every transaction on your device.
Once you’ve completed the quiz, you’re ready to safely manage your crypto .
Only one quick step left: The Genuine Check
On your Ledger Live App, click “Check My Nano”
Next, keep your Ledger Nano X still connected into your laptop via USB cable.
Unlock your device with the PIN code
Now, Ledger checks the authenticity of the device to ensure that it’s not a compromised device or a device that has been tampered with.
This takes just a few minutes (1 – 2 mins).
Once the check is successful, you’re Ledger Nano X is now set up and ready for use.
a. Next, you need to install apps, create accounts before you can receive and store coins on your Ledger.
b. Click on continue to launch the Ledger Live Dashboard
c. Next, let’s install the Bitcoin app on your device.
d. In Ledger Live, click “Add Account”
e. Under Crypto Assets, select Bitcoin (BTC) in the drop down menu
f. Click Continue
g. Bitcoin app will now be installed on your Ledger Nano X
h. Next, open the Bitcoin app on your device by pressing the left and right buttons on your Ledger Nano X
i. Bitcoin (Native Segwit) is displayed on Ledger Live
j. Click Add Account again and now you have successfully added Bitcoin app on your Nano X.
k. To add other apps like Ethereum, Cardano and more, simply click on “Accounts” and repeat the steps above.
As an additional layer of security, it’s important to protect your Ledger Live data on your computer, including account names, balances, transactions, and public addresses by requiring password upon log in.
a. To password your Ledger Live app, go to “Settings”⚙️ (that’s the last button on the upper right with the gear button)
b. Scroll down to ‘Password lock” and enable it by sliding the button to the right
c. Go ahead and create a complex password and write it down in your notebook.
d. So the next time, you open the Ledger Live app, you’ll need to enter the password to access your dashboard.
